Botswana's main ethnic groups are the Tswana, Kalanga, Batswapong, Babirwa, Basarwa or Bushmen, Bayei, Hambukushu, Basubia, Baherero and Bakgalagadi. The Tswana, who are the largest ethnic group have eight tribes or sub-groups who are Bamangwato, Bakwena, Bangwaketse, Batawana, Batlokwa, Bakgatla, Barolong and Balete.

 

The culture of Botswana is prominent in the Setswana language, traditional music, local food, dance, traditional attire, rituals and other ceremonies like wedding celebrations. Botswana culture is celebrated every year in a commemorative festival called 'Letsatsi la Ngwao' - Botswana Culture Day.

Approximately 38% of Botswana is either National Park, reserve or wildlife management areas.

 

Kubu Island, or Lekhubu Island, is located in the South-West of the Sua Pan in Botswana, on its side the Sua, or Sowa, Pan is part of the Makgadikgadi Pans complex, that altogether cover an area of ​​16,058 sq. Km, the largest complex of salinas in the world.

Chobe National Park is in northern Botswana near the vast, inland Okavango Delta. It's known for its large herds of elephants and Cape buffalo, which converge along the Chobe Riverfront in the dry months. Lions, antelopes and hippos inhabit the woods and lagoons around Linyanti Marsh. The floodable grasslands of the Savuti Marsh attract numerous bird species, plus migrating zebras.

 

Central Kalahari Game Reserve covers a large section of central Botswana. Its harsh, sprawling terrain is dominated by grasslands, home to wildlife such as giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs. There are several fossilized river valleys, including Deception Valley and Passarge Valley, which offer basic campsites. Dirt tracks wind south through the reserve's remote landscapes to the Piper’s Pan area.

Botswana has a large zebra migration, the mass zebra migration of Botswana occurs twice a year, as herds of zebra move first from north to south, then back from south to north. They move with the seasons and the rainfall, always in search of fresh grazing land. The zebra will cover huge tracts of land, walking over 500 km during the course of the migrations. Up to 30,000 animals will be on the move at any one time. While it’s not Africa’s largest migration, it is the largest in southern Africa, and the longest migration of any land animal in the world.

 

Botswana hosts the world's largest population of cheetahs, with an estimated population of approximately 1,700 individuals. This accounts for approximately 25% of the world's remaining wild cheetahs.

 

Botswana is considered to have the largest population of wild dogs with more than 700 of the presumed 3000 - 5000 left.

 

Botswana listed 595 species of birds of August 2019, according to BirdLife Botswana.

 

With unfenced parks and wide-open spaces, Botswana has the world's largest elephant population with more than 135,000 animals - about a third of the African continent's total.

 

Researchers observed five lionesses at the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana exhibiting male behaviors, like growing long manes, marking their territory, mounting other females, and roaring.
